Former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett believes the Football Association (FA) is likely to take disciplinary action against both Manchester United and Tottenham following the heated confrontation at Old Trafford on Saturday, 10 October.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett explained that football authorities would be keen to avoid such scenes being broadcast to audiences around the world, insisting that the behaviour displayed by both teams was unacceptable.
Tempers flared during the encounter after Luke Shaw took exception to a reckless challenge from Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. The Manchester United defender immediately confronted the Uruguayan, pushing him forcefully to the ground before Bentancur got back to his feet and appeared to headbutt his opponent.
The incident quickly escalated into a mass confrontation, with several players from both sides becoming involved.
Bentancur was shown a straight red card for his actions, while Shaw received only a yellow card despite his involvement in the altercation. The situation became even more heated when Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was also seen getting involved during the 78th minute.
The incident has raised questions about whether both clubs could face disciplinary consequences, particularly given the involvement of multiple players and members of the coaching staff.
‘The FA Will Charge Both Manchester United and Tottenham’
Hackett expects the FA to intervene following the ugly scenes at Old Trafford, suggesting that both clubs could be charged with failing to control their players.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee explained:
“There is no doubt that the FA will charge both teams with failure to control their players. That’s the usual approach.”
He added that there was little justification for what happened, stressing that professional football demands discipline and respect from everyone involved.
“I don’t think there’s any level of excuse. The competition expects the right image to be reflected around the world. In a sense, this is thuggery and unacceptable.”
Although some supporters might enjoy the intensity and confrontation that occasionally emerge during fiercely contested matches, Hackett believes such behaviour crosses the line when players fail to exercise self-control.
“As a fan, we might enjoy it. But the reality is that in a game of football, self-control is part of what you expect from a professional player.”
He also questioned the argument that modern football lacks passion, suggesting that incidents like this demonstrate the intensity players bring to the game, even when their emotions get the better of them.
Michael Carrick and Manchester United Fortunate as Shaw Escapes a Red Card
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi will undoubtedly be disappointed with Bentancur’s behaviour, particularly because the midfielder is one of the more experienced members of his squad and should be expected to maintain his composure in difficult situations.
Bentancur’s decision to react physically could prove costly for Tottenham, especially if further disciplinary action follows the red card he received during the confrontation.
However, the incident has also sparked debate among Spurs supporters, with some likely to argue that Shaw should have received a more severe punishment for his own actions.
Hackett shares that view, describing the Manchester United left-back’s reaction as “really aggressive” and suggesting that his conduct was “bordering on violent”.
Considering Shaw’s history of injuries, his frustration following Bentancur’s challenge was perhaps understandable. Nevertheless, Hackett believes that the defender’s response also deserved serious scrutiny.
While Bentancur was rightly dismissed for his headbutt, the debate surrounding Shaw’s punishment is unlikely to disappear immediately.
The FA’s next move could determine whether the incident ends with Bentancur’s dismissal or develops into a wider disciplinary issue involving both Manchester United and Tottenham.
