Harry Kane has reportedly opened up about an awkward moment involving a fellow footballer who failed to congratulate him after his historic Ballon d’Or victory, with the incident attracting widespread attention across the football world.

The Bayern Munich striker claimed the prestigious award on Monday night at the London Palladium, narrowly finishing ahead of Kylian Mbappe by fewer than 41 points. His triumph made him the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001 and only the fifth Englishman to achieve the remarkable feat.

Kane enjoyed an outstanding campaign, scoring 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England across the season. He also helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title, claimed the European Golden Shoe and was named Striker of the Year for the second time. His contributions to England’s impressive World Cup campaign, which ended with a third-place finish, further strengthened his case for the individual honour.

It was undoubtedly one of the finest individual seasons of his career. However, despite the significance of the occasion, attention soon shifted towards an uncomfortable moment involving some of football’s biggest stars.

Awkward Moment Involving Mbappe and Dembele At The London Palladium

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony was staged in London as a special tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the first-ever recipient of the prestigious award.

The event attracted several of the biggest names in world football, with cameras capturing almost every moment of the glamorous ceremony.

However, footage from inside the London Palladium showed an unusual interaction involving Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

Before the winner was announced, the England captain approached the two French internationals to exchange greetings. However, neither player appeared particularly eager to get out of their seats as Kane bent down to shake their hands.

Mbappe initially appeared distracted, while Dembele was reportedly occupied with his phone.

Kane maintained his composure, exchanging greetings with both players before moving on without making a scene.

The situation attracted even more attention when Kane was eventually announced as the winner.

Footage from the ceremony appeared to show Mbappe remaining seated instead of immediately standing to congratulate the Bayern Munich striker. Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, who finished third in the voting, also appeared visibly disappointed, looking away during parts of Kane’s acceptance speech.

Meanwhile, Michael Olise, who represents France alongside Mbappe and plays with Kane at Bayern Munich, immediately stood up to congratulate his teammate.

Former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri also got to his feet and embraced Kane, creating a noticeable contrast with the reactions of some of the other nominees.

Unsurprisingly, the footage quickly generated heated discussions across social media, with several supporters questioning the behaviour of the players who remained seated.

One supporter wrote on X: “You should stand up when someone greets you. What kind of rude people are these?”

Another commented: “Why didn’t he stand up? This guy has no respect.”

A third added: “Harry Kane is the one going around greeting everyone, yet some of them cannot even stand up to congratulate him.”

Another supporter went further, describing Mbappe and Yamal’s reactions as disrespectful and suggesting that Kane deserved better recognition following his achievement.

The controversy even attracted the attention of etiquette expert Laura Windsor, who spoke to the Daily Mail about the importance of showing respect during such occasions.

According to her, standing up when someone approaches to greet you is a basic gesture of courtesy, particularly when acknowledging an achievement as significant as winning the Ballon d’Or.

Kane Responds With Powerful Message After Historic Achievement

Despite the awkward exchanges, Kane refused to allow the situation to overshadow what was arguably the biggest individual night of his football career.

The England captain avoided addressing the controversy directly during his acceptance speech, instead using the occasion to recognise the people who had supported him throughout his journey.

He thanked France Football for organising the ceremony and expressed his appreciation for being able to receive the award in London.

Kane also acknowledged his family, wife Katie, former teammates and the coaches who played important roles in his development, including those from his early days at Leyton Orient and other clubs.

During his emotional speech, he admitted that he was almost lost for words before joking that he had prepared a list to help him remember everyone he wanted to thank.

He subsequently lifted the famous trophy and posed for photographs, celebrating a moment that had taken years of dedication and hard work to achieve.

However, his social media activity later attracted further attention after he shared a message that many supporters interpreted as a response to the criticism and awkward moments surrounding the ceremony.

Kane posted: “Work hard in silence. Let success be your noise.”

The message quickly gained attention, with supporters praising the striker for allowing his performances and achievements to do the talking rather than engaging in unnecessary confrontations.

England Call-Up Brings Further Attention To Kane’s Comments

With another England international call-up approaching, Kane’s comments about the reactions to his Ballon d’Or triumph have reportedly become a major talking point.

The striker is said to have expressed disappointment over the lack of congratulations from certain individuals following an achievement that represented the highest point of his professional career.

His reported comments highlighted how much the award meant to him, considering the sacrifices and setbacks he experienced before reaching the top of world football.

Kane also reportedly made it clear that he understands the disappointment that comes with losing individual awards, having experienced defeats in major finals and award competitions himself.

However, he believes that acknowledging another player’s success should never be difficult.

He reportedly said: “I have no problem with losing. I have lost finals. I have lost awards. I know what it feels like. But respect costs nothing. Stand up. Shake the hand. Say well done. That is football.”

The incident has continued to generate debate among supporters, particularly over whether the reactions of the other nominees reflected disappointment or a lack of sportsmanship.

For Kane, however, his historic Ballon d’Or victory remains the defining achievement of an extraordinary season.
