Brennan Johnson is beginning to face mounting scrutiny at Everton, with growing questions surrounding his performances, attacking contribution and whether David Moyes should continue trusting him with a regular place in the starting XI.

The Welsh international arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium with expectations of adding pace, creativity and a greater attacking threat to Everton’s forward line. However, his early performances have not consistently delivered the improvement supporters were hoping to see.

Having previously demonstrated his goalscoring qualities in the Premier League, Johnson was expected to become an important attacking weapon for Moyes. Instead, his inability to make a consistent impact has increasingly become a talking point among Everton supporters.

Another Disappointing Display Raises Questions

The concerns surrounding Johnson are not entirely new. His performance against Arsenal on October 24 attracted considerable criticism after he struggled to influence proceedings during Everton’s 2-0 defeat.

According to match statistics, the 25-year-old managed just nine touches in 72 minutes, failed to register a shot and committed four fouls. He also struggled in individual battles, winning only two of seven duels.

Those numbers painted a worrying picture for a player expected to provide attacking inspiration.

More concerningly, Johnson has yet to register a Premier League goal or assist for Everton after nine appearances this season, despite having opportunities to establish himself in Moyes’ attacking setup. Read Everton F.C. +2

Tyler Dibling’s Emergence Could Make Matters Worse

One of the biggest problems for Johnson is that Everton have other attacking options waiting for opportunities.

Tyler Dibling is among the players hoping to benefit from the Welshman’s disappointing performances. The young winger has shown glimpses of his ability, and there have been growing calls for Moyes to give him more opportunities rather than repeatedly relying on Johnson.

Indeed, Dibling was handed a starting opportunity against Coventry City on November 6, while Johnson began the match on the bench.

Although Dibling did not produce a particularly outstanding performance, he played a part in Everton’s equaliser, helping create the opportunity that allowed Thierno Barry to score.

Johnson eventually came on as a substitute, but his contribution was limited, with ToffeeWeb awarding him a six out of ten. ToffeeWeb +1

Moyes Faces an Important Decision

There is little doubt that Johnson possesses qualities that could make him an important player for Everton. His pace, movement and previous Premier League experience suggest there is considerably more to come from him.

However, potential alone cannot guarantee a starting position, particularly at a club looking to establish itself among the Premier League’s competitive sides.

Everton have now recorded three consecutive victories, including their impressive 3-1 comeback against Coventry, and Moyes will be reluctant to disrupt a winning team unnecessarily.

The manager must therefore decide whether Johnson deserves another opportunity to rediscover his confidence or whether it is time to give other players a sustained run in the starting XI.

Former Everton midfielder Barry Horne has also defended Johnson’s potential, describing his move to Everton as a fantastic opportunity to get his career moving again. That suggests there remains belief in his ability, even as concerns about his performances continue. ToffeeWeb +1

For Johnson, the situation is becoming increasingly important. Everton supporters want to see a winger who can make defenders uncomfortable, create opportunities and contribute goals.

His reputation and previous achievements will only buy him so much time. If he cannot translate his qualities into consistent performances, Moyes could increasingly find it difficult to justify giving him a regular starting position.

The message is becoming increasingly clear: Brennan Johnson needs to start delivering on the pitch before frustration turns into a much bigger problem at Everton.
