Harry Maguire was left red-faced after Manchester United suffered another disappointing setback, throwing away a valuable victory in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

United struggled to cope with Tottenham’s attacking threat during the opening 45 minutes, with the visitors creating several promising opportunities. Despite being second-best for much of the first half, the Red Devils managed to reach the interval without conceding.

The hosts returned with greater intensity after the break, eventually finding the breakthrough through Bryan Mbeumo, who fired Manchester United into the lead with just 17 minutes remaining.

United appeared to have taken a significant step towards securing all three points when Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a red card for headbutting Luke Shaw. With Tottenham reduced to 10 men, the home supporters had every reason to believe the result was effectively settled.

However, Manchester United’s inconsistent performances continued to haunt them, as another late twist transformed what looked like a comfortable victory into a frustrating afternoon.

Deep into stoppage time, Sandro Tonali delivered a hopeful cross into the penalty area. Dominic Solanke managed to get a slight touch on the ball with his head, redirecting it beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner to send the Tottenham players into celebrations.

The equaliser left Old Trafford stunned, particularly given that Tottenham had been reduced to 10 men and were still searching for their first victory of the season.

For Manchester United, the result represented another painful disappointment. But for Maguire, the late goal made the situation even more embarrassing because of his reaction to Bentancur’s dismissal earlier in the match.

As the Uruguayan midfielder made his way towards the touchline following his red card, Maguire was spotted sarcastically waving goodbye to the Tottenham star while appearing to say, “Bye bye.”

The Manchester United defender seemed confident that Bentancur’s dismissal had effectively ended Tottenham’s hopes of getting anything from the encounter.

Unfortunately for Maguire, the visitors had other ideas. Solanke’s dramatic equaliser ensured Tottenham left Old Trafford with a point, allowing the away players to celebrate a result that had looked increasingly unlikely after the sending-off.

The moment provided an ironic twist, with Maguire’s apparent mockery of Bentancur followed by a late Tottenham goal that denied United the victory they desperately wanted.

Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was pleased with the determination his players demonstrated, particularly after finding themselves a goal behind and down to 10 men.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, the Italian praised his team’s first-half performance while acknowledging the quality of their opponents.

“It’s not the first time. I think we are playing very well. We can’t forget the opponent. Big players. But I think in the first half we deserved to be two goals up,” De Zerbi explained.

He admitted that Tottenham experienced difficulties during the early stages of the second half but highlighted Bentancur’s dismissal as a turning point in the contest.

“In the first part of the second half, we suffered. The red card was the switch. It was the right reaction after the red card because we deserved to score,” he added.

De Zerbi also defended Bentancur’s character despite the midfielder’s costly mistake, insisting that the incident should not overshadow his overall qualities.

“Bentancur is a good guy, top player, great character. He made mistake but in this moment, this club needs a reaction. Sometimes it’s not nice, it’s not right. I want to see the same character, the same personality we did this afternoon,” the Tottenham manager said.

The Spurs boss subsequently urged his players to remain united and continue working hard despite their difficult position in the league standings.

He acknowledged that Tottenham still have considerable work to do but expressed confidence that consistent performances, discipline and collective responsibility could eventually deliver better results.

“I believe in football if we work well and if we are serious people and have qualities, you will make results. It’s difficult to understand but if we are on the bottom of the table, we have to stay there. We have to be a team and then we find the results,” De Zerbi concluded.

For Tottenham, the late equaliser offered encouragement and demonstrated the importance of continuing to fight even when circumstances appear unfavourable.

Manchester United, meanwhile, were left to reflect on another missed opportunity. What seemed destined to be a valuable home victory ultimately became another frustrating result, while Maguire’s premature celebration of Bentancur’s dismissal added an extra layer of embarrassment to an already disappointing afternoon at Old Trafford.
