Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly stepping up their search for a new number nine ahead of the January transfer window, with the club continuing to explore options across Europe.
Richarlison is expected to leave Spurs during the winter window after being omitted from the club’s Premier League squad. At the same time, neither Dominic Solanke nor Omar Marmoush has done enough to fully convince in front of goal so far this season.
With that in mind, Roberto De Zerbi’s side have now reportedly joined the race for one of Europe’s most prolific strikers this campaign — Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis.
Tottenham interested in Vangelis Pavlidis
Tottenham were among the clubs linked with Pavlidis during the summer transfer window, and they could now revive their interest in the Greek international.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed an exceptional start to the campaign, finding the net 14 times in just 13 appearances across all competitions for Benfica.
According to A Bola, as relayed by Sport Witness, Spurs were among several clubs who made approaches for Pavlidis during the summer.
Aston Villa, Barcelona, AC Milan, AS Roma, Juventus, Fenerbahçe and Besiktas were also reportedly interested in the striker, with the latest report suggesting that the attention surrounding him has not disappeared.
Benfica were determined to keep hold of Pavlidis, with manager Marco Silva particularly keen for the striker to remain at the club. The Portuguese giants therefore resisted the approaches in order to satisfy their head coach.
Spurs and Aston Villa could have an advantage
Pavlidis’ long-standing ambition to play in the Premier League could potentially give Tottenham and Aston Villa an advantage over the other clubs monitoring his situation.
However, the striker is reportedly not prepared to force his way out of Benfica. Pavlidis has made it clear that he will not push for a move unless the Lisbon club agree to his departure.
That leaves Benfica in a strong negotiating position.
Pavlidis is under contract with the Portuguese club until 2029, while his current deal reportedly includes a €100 million (£85m) release clause.
Tottenham could therefore face a significant financial hurdle if they decide to pursue the prolific striker in January, particularly with competition from several major European clubs.
