Tottenham Hotspur have been searching across Europe for a new number nine ahead of the January transfer window, with the club expected to strengthen their attacking options.

Richarlison is increasingly likely to leave during the winter window after being excluded from Tottenham’s Premier League squad. At the same time, neither Omar Marmoush nor Dominic Solanke has managed to provide the consistency Spurs need in front of goal this season.

Amid their search for a new striker, Roberto De Zerbi’s side have reportedly entered the race for a 27-year-old centre-forward who has been among Europe’s most prolific goalscorers this campaign.

Tottenham Join Race for Vangelis Pavlidis

Tottenham were linked with Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis during the summer transfer window, and the Greek international’s outstanding form could leave Spurs regretting their decision not to pursue a deal more aggressively.

Pavlidis has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 14 goals in just 13 appearances across all competitions.

According to A Bola, as reported by Sport Witness, Tottenham were among several clubs to show an interest in the Benfica forward during the summer.

Aston Villa, Barcelona, AC Milan, AS Roma, Juventus, Fenerbahçe and Besiktas were also reportedly interested, with the latest reports suggesting that the attention surrounding Pavlidis has not disappeared.

Benfica were determined to keep hold of their star striker, with head coach Marco Silva reportedly particularly keen to retain his services. As a result, the Portuguese giants resisted the approaches they received during the summer.

Spurs Have Premier League Advantage

Pavlidis’ long-standing ambition to play in the Premier League could give Tottenham and Aston Villa an advantage over the other clubs monitoring his situation.

However, the striker is reportedly not prepared to force his way out of Benfica. Pavlidis has made it clear that he will not push for a transfer unless the Lisbon-based club gives him permission to leave.

Benfica are therefore in a strong negotiating position. Pavlidis remains under contract until 2029, while his current agreement reportedly contains a €100 million (£85m) release clause.

With Tottenham searching for a reliable goalscorer ahead of January, Pavlidis’ remarkable form and desire to eventually play in the Premier League could make him an increasingly attractive option for De Zerbi’s side.
