Vinai Venkatesham has made Tottenham’s ambitions crystal clear, insisting that the club are determined to win the Premier League and eventually lift the Champions League trophy under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Spurs have endured a difficult period in recent seasons, finishing 17th in the Premier League for two consecutive campaigns and only managing to escape relegation on the final day of last season.
De Zerbi arrived in March with the responsibility of rescuing Tottenham from a disastrous campaign following Thomas Frank’s disappointing spell in charge and Igor Tudor’s unsuccessful interim tenure.
The Italian eventually guided the club to safety, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day ensuring Tottenham survived at the expense of London rivals West Ham.
Although Spurs made a disappointing start to the current campaign, sitting bottom of the Premier League without a win at the first international break, their performances have improved significantly in recent weeks.
Three consecutive victories have lifted De Zerbi’s men to ninth place in the table, giving the club renewed confidence ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime encounter against Leeds United.
And Venkatesham believes Tottenham are finally moving in the right direction, with the club’s chief executive making it clear that their ambitions extend far beyond simply competing for a place in the Premier League’s top four.
Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, Venkatesham discussed the club’s long-term vision following a turbulent period that has seen major changes behind the scenes, including De Zerbi’s appointment and efforts to rebuild the squad.
He made it clear that Tottenham are not simply interested in returning to their former position among England’s leading clubs but are determined to compete for the biggest trophies in European football.
Venkatesham said: “Ultimately, I guess the best way to answer your question is what are we here for? We’re here to win, right? The people that we’ve attracted to the football club, the long list of people, everyone is here to win.
“If you work for Tottenham, when we talk about being here to win, that means we’re here to win the Premier League. That’s what this football club wants to do.
“It wants to win the Premier League and it wants to be consistent in the Champions League and it wants to ultimately win the Champions League.
“Can I tell you what year that’s going to happen in? Obviously I can’t, but that’s what we’re aiming for and that’s what I want every single person that works for this club to think about every single day.
“I want them to never settle and I want us to be completely relentless in that pursuit.”
His comments represent a significant change in tone compared to the difficult circumstances Tottenham found themselves in towards the end of last season.
At that stage, the club were fighting desperately to avoid dropping out of the Premier League after a disastrous campaign that left supporters fearing the worst.
However, De Zerbi managed to deliver when it mattered most, guiding Spurs to a crucial 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day to secure their top-flight status while condemning West Ham to relegation.
Venkatesham did not hide how difficult that period was for everyone associated with the club, admitting that Tottenham had endured one of the most challenging chapters in their recent history.
“It was really challenging, a really, really challenging period for the club,” he admitted.
When asked whether he had prepared for the possibility of Tottenham being relegated to the Championship, the chief executive confirmed that contingency plans had been necessary.
“Yeah, you have to. You can’t not.
“To not make that plan would have been irresponsible. When I look back at that period, I take probably two things.
“I think our supporters were unbelievable. The last six or seven games, when they had faced probably the worst season they have ever faced, they got completely behind the team and the head coach and dragged us over the line. This is not normal.
“The second thing is sometimes going through something as traumatic as we went through last season bonds people. It puts even more fire in everyone’s belly to make sure something like that never happens again.”
Venkatesham’s latest comments will undoubtedly raise expectations among Tottenham supporters, particularly with De Zerbi now being backed to oversee a long-term transformation.
After coming dangerously close to relegation, the club’s immediate priority remains establishing consistency and returning to the Premier League’s elite.
However, the chief executive’s message is clear: Tottenham are not satisfied with simply surviving or qualifying for European competitions. Their ultimate ambition is to become Premier League champions and conquer Europe.
