Jamie Carragher has given Tottenham Hotspur supporters another reason to feel encouraged about the club’s decision to bring Jan Paul van Hecke to north London, after the former Liverpool defender highlighted the qualities he has already seen from the Dutchman.
Van Hecke arrived at Tottenham from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer transfer window in a deal reported to be worth around £52 million. His arrival was an important part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans to strengthen a defensive unit that needed greater quality, experience and composure.
The 26-year-old was already familiar with the Italian manager, having worked under him at Brighton. That previous relationship was considered an important factor in Tottenham’s decision to pursue his signature, with De Zerbi clearly understanding the qualities the centre-back could bring to his team.
And although Van Hecke has experienced difficult moments during his early months in north London, Carragher has seen enough to suggest that the defender possesses qualities capable of making a difference to Tottenham.
Carragher identifies an important quality in Van Hecke
Speaking about Tottenham’s summer recruitment during their difficult start to the campaign, Carragher acknowledged the quality of several players brought into the squad.
The former Liverpool defender specifically mentioned Van Hecke while discussing the improvements he believed the new arrivals could eventually bring to De Zerbi’s side.
Carragher said: “Certainly in midfield in Fernandes, Tonali. [I] saw signs in Van Hecke today, in terms of on the ball.”
Although it was not an extravagant declaration, the assessment was significant because it highlighted one of the qualities De Zerbi values most in his central defenders.
The Italian wants his team to build attacks from the back rather than simply surrender possession whenever opponents apply pressure. His defenders are expected to remain comfortable in possession, recognise passing opportunities and help the midfielders progress the ball into dangerous areas.
Van Hecke’s ability to operate in that system was one of the reasons Tottenham moved for him.
The Dutchman is not simply a defender whose job is to clear crosses and win physical battles. He is also capable of stepping forward with possession, finding teammates between the opposition’s lines and helping his team establish control.
Those qualities were already visible during his time at Brighton, and Carragher’s assessment suggests he has recognised similar characteristics since the defender’s arrival at Tottenham.
Why De Zerbi wanted his former Brighton defender
Van Hecke’s transfer was particularly interesting because De Zerbi already knew exactly what he was getting.
The pair enjoyed a productive working relationship at Brighton, where the defender developed into an important member of the Italian’s team.
During the 2023/24 campaign, Van Hecke made 39 appearances in all competitions, continuing his development under a manager who demands considerable responsibility from his defenders.
His experience in De Zerbi’s system therefore gives Tottenham an advantage. Unlike some of the other summer arrivals, he did not have to start from scratch when learning the manager’s tactical instructions.
The Dutch international understands the importance of maintaining possession, playing forward when opportunities appear and defending aggressively when opponents attempt to break through.
That combination makes him an interesting partner for Micky van de Ven, particularly when Tottenham are attempting to play a high defensive line.
However, adapting to a new club comes with pressure, especially when the transfer fee is substantial and supporters expect immediate improvements.
Van Hecke has not been flawless, but his ability to contribute in possession remains an important part of what Tottenham believe he can offer.
Van Hecke begins to make his mark in front of goal
The defender has also demonstrated that he can contribute at the opposite end of the pitch.
He scored his first goal for Tottenham during their 3–2 defeat against Aston Villa on September 19, finding the net late in the match as Spurs attempted to produce a comeback.
Although the result was disappointing, the goal provided another indication of his willingness to contribute beyond his defensive responsibilities.
Van Hecke then found the net again against Crystal Palace on October 31, scoring Tottenham’s second goal in their 2–0 victory at Selhurst Park.
The Dutchman was involved in a match that became considerably more difficult for Palace after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off early in the first half following a VAR review of his challenge on Micky van de Ven.
Tottenham eventually took advantage, with Archie Gray opening the scoring before Van Hecke added the second to secure another important Premier League victory.
His contribution was particularly encouraging because it demonstrated his ability to influence matches in different ways.
Tottenham’s summer recruitment beginning to show promise
Carragher’s comments also form part of a wider discussion about Tottenham’s transfer strategy under De Zerbi.
Spurs invested heavily during the summer, bringing in several players as they attempted to rebuild after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
Van Hecke was among the important additions, alongside midfield reinforcements and experienced defensive options.
There were questions about the amount Tottenham were spending, particularly given the club’s disappointing previous campaign. However, Carragher made it clear that he recognised the quality of several players arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The former Liverpool defender also acknowledged that rebuilding a team with so many new arrivals would require patience.
That remains an important consideration for De Zerbi. Tottenham cannot expect every signing to immediately reach their highest level, particularly when the manager is attempting to introduce a demanding style of football.
Nevertheless, Van Hecke’s growing influence provides encouragement.
For Tottenham supporters, the biggest attraction is that the defender understands the manager’s philosophy and possesses the technical qualities required to execute it.
His performances will continue to attract attention, especially as Spurs look to build consistency and climb the Premier League table.
Carragher’s assessment may not have been a dramatic endorsement, but his recognition of Van Hecke’s ability on the ball is another indication that the Dutchman has the tools to become an important figure in De Zerbi’s project.
