Harry Redknapp Reveals How Daniel Levy Prevented Tottenham from Signing Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard was regarded as one of the most exciting young footballers in Europe during his time at Lille, attracting attention from several top clubs before eventually joining Chelsea in 2012.
However, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has now revealed just how close the North London club came to signing the Belgian superstar, claiming that a move to White Hart Lane was a genuine possibility before financial disagreements prevented the deal from happening.
Redknapp disclosed that he personally watched Hazard in action on several occasions and even held a meeting with the winger and his agent after receiving a glowing recommendation from former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole.
According to the former Spurs manager, Hazard was willing to join Tottenham, but the club’s reluctance to meet the financial demands ultimately brought the proposed transfer to an end.
Harry Redknapp Reveals How Tottenham Nearly Signed Eden Hazard
Redknapp has lifted the lid on one of Tottenham’s biggest transfer regrets, explaining how Cole first alerted him to Hazard’s extraordinary talent while the pair were playing together at Lille.
Cole was so impressed by his teammate’s ability that he contacted Redknapp directly, urging the Tottenham boss to take a closer look at the Belgian youngster.
Taking the recommendation seriously, Redknapp travelled to watch Hazard and returned the following week to continue assessing the highly rated attacker. His interest eventually led to a face-to-face meeting with the player and his representative.
The most significant revelation from Redknapp’s account is that Hazard was reportedly prepared to make the move to Tottenham, giving the club a genuine opportunity to secure his services before Chelsea entered the picture.
However, despite the player’s apparent willingness to join Spurs, the deal never materialised because the club’s hierarchy was unwilling to sanction the required investment.
Speaking on BT Sport, Redknapp explained:
“Well, I met Eden Hazard. Joe Cole rang me. He was at Lille, and he said, ‘I’m playing with the best player I’ve ever played with.’ I went over and watched him, went back again the week after, and met him in a hotel room with his agent, and he wanted to come. But at the time, Daniel didn’t want to spend the money on him. I think it was about £18 million.”
Redknapp’s comments offer a glimpse into how close Tottenham came to securing one of the most gifted attacking players of his generation. They also raise questions about whether a different decision from the club’s leadership could have changed the course of Tottenham’s history.
Eden Hazard Became a Chelsea Legend After Tottenham Missed Out
Tottenham’s failure to sign Hazard became an even more painful missed opportunity when Chelsea eventually won the race for his signature in the summer of 2012.
The Blues secured the Belgian’s services for a reported fee of approximately £32 million after winning the Champions League, bringing one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents to Stamford Bridge.
Hazard quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking players, dazzling supporters with his exceptional dribbling, close control, creativity and ability to decide matches in the biggest moments.
During his seven seasons at Chelsea, the Belgian made 352 Premier League appearances, scoring 110 goals and providing 85 assists. His performances helped transform him into one of the club’s most influential players of the modern era.
He played a crucial role in Chelsea’s success, winning two Premier League titles, two Europa League trophies and the FA Cup, alongside several individual awards.
Hazard’s ability to glide past defenders and create opportunities from seemingly impossible situations made him a nightmare for opposing teams. He consistently delivered decisive performances, helping Chelsea establish themselves among English football’s leading sides.
In 2019, Hazard completed a high-profile move to Real Madrid, bringing his successful spell in west London to an end and leaving behind a legacy as one of Chelsea’s greatest attacking players.
For Tottenham supporters, the thought of what might have happened had Hazard chosen White Hart Lane remains particularly frustrating. A player who went on to dominate English football at a direct London rival could potentially have been wearing the famous white shirt instead.
Daniel Levy’s Decision Remains a Major Tottenham Transfer Regret
Redknapp’s revelation has reignited the debate surrounding Tottenham’s transfer strategy during Daniel Levy’s time in charge of the club.
Although Levy oversaw significant financial and infrastructural development, including the construction of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, his cautious approach to transfer spending frequently attracted criticism from supporters who wanted the club to compete more aggressively for elite players.
The reported £18 million fee mentioned by Redknapp makes the missed opportunity particularly striking when viewed against Hazard’s subsequent achievements at Chelsea.
Had Tottenham completed the deal, Hazard might have provided the attacking quality needed to help the club take another step towards challenging for major honours during a crucial period in its development.
Of course, there is no guarantee that Hazard would have enjoyed the same success at Tottenham as he did at Chelsea. Nevertheless, his willingness to consider the move, as described by Redknapp, makes the story a fascinating example of how financial decisions can shape a club’s future.
For Spurs fans who have long questioned the club’s willingness to invest in world-class talent, the revelation is another reminder of an opportunity that slipped away.
And with Hazard eventually becoming a Chelsea icon, Tottenham supporters could be forgiven for wondering how differently their club’s modern history might have unfolded had Levy agreed to pay the price.
