Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has been left to consider what might have been after his side were held to an entertaining 2–2 draw against Everton, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s influential performance becoming one of the major talking points following the final whistle.
Both teams delivered a fiercely contested performance, demonstrating attacking intent, determination and a willingness to fight for every opportunity. Hull had reasons to believe they could claim all three points, but Everton showed enough quality and resilience to ensure they returned home with a share of the spoils.
Although Jakirović had plenty of positives to take from his players’ performance, Everton’s ability to respond under pressure proved particularly significant, with Dewsbury-Hall playing an important role in the visitors’ comeback.
Speaking to journalists after the match, the Hull manager was asked to assess his team’s display and explain his feelings about the result.
Jakirović admitted that missing out on victory was disappointing, particularly after his players had worked tirelessly throughout the encounter. However, he insisted that Hull had demonstrated the qualities required to compete against a team of Everton’s calibre.
He said:
“First of all, I have to give credit to my players because they worked extremely hard today. We knew Everton would be a difficult opponent, and we understood that we would have to be organised, aggressive and brave whenever we had the opportunity to attack.
“I thought we showed those qualities for large parts of the game. We created problems for Everton, we competed for every ball, and we showed that we have the ability to challenge a team with their quality.
“When you score twice against an opponent like Everton, you naturally believe you can win the game. That is why the result is disappointing. We wanted three points, and I believe the players did enough in terms of effort and commitment to give ourselves a chance of achieving that.”
Hull’s performance provided plenty of encouragement, as they managed to trouble Everton while creating opportunities to take control of the contest. However, maintaining their advantage proved difficult against opponents who continued searching for a way back into the game.
As the match progressed, the intensity increased, with both teams attempting to find the decisive breakthrough. Neither side ultimately managed to establish the superiority needed to secure victory, leaving the encounter to finish 2–2.
Jakirović was subsequently asked about Everton’s performance and whether he believed the visitors deserved to leave with a point.
The Hull boss acknowledged the threat posed by Everton’s attacking players, explaining that their individual quality made it difficult for his team to maintain control throughout the match.
He added:
“Everton made life very difficult for us. They have quality in their team, and when you allow players of that level to find their rhythm, they can punish you.
“We had to remain focused because they were constantly looking for ways to hurt us. Even when we felt we were in a good position, Everton found ways to respond.
“That is what makes this result frustrating. I respect Everton, and I respect the way they competed. They did not give up, and they made sure we had to fight until the final whistle.”
His comments underlined the challenge Hull faced against an Everton side determined to avoid defeat. Despite the home team’s efforts to secure maximum points, the visitors continued to find opportunities to threaten, ensuring that the outcome remained uncertain until the end.
Dewsbury-Hall’s Influence Becomes a Talking Point
Attention eventually shifted to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, whose contribution proved particularly important for Everton.
The midfielder found the equaliser for the visitors and helped inspire their response during a contest in which Hull had threatened to claim victory. His ability to influence proceedings at crucial moments highlighted the value he brought to Everton’s performance.
Jakirović was asked whether Dewsbury-Hall’s display had been a decisive factor in preventing Hull from securing all three points.
The Hull manager acknowledged the midfielder’s influence, praising his quality and ability to make an impact when his team needed it most.
He explained:
“When you look at the game, you have to recognise the influence certain players can have. Dewsbury-Hall was important for Everton. He showed quality, composure and the ability to make an impact when his team needed someone to step forward.
“We worked hard to try to control the game, but Everton have players who can change the situation in a moment. Dewsbury-Hall was one of those players, and his contribution made our task much more difficult.
“Of course, football is never about one player alone. We had our opportunities, and we must look at what we could have done better. But you cannot ignore the influence he had on Everton’s response.”
The midfielder’s equaliser represented an important moment for Everton, helping the visitors recover during a difficult away encounter. His contribution also demonstrated how individual quality can prove decisive in closely contested matches where neither team is able to establish lasting control.
For Everton, the draw offered some encouragement, particularly because the team refused to surrender despite facing a determined Hull side. Their response demonstrated resilience, while Dewsbury-Hall’s contribution provided another positive to take from the performance.
However, Hull will be disappointed that their efforts did not translate into victory. Jakirović can take satisfaction from his players’ commitment and attacking ambition, but the match also exposed the importance of managing crucial moments more effectively against opponents capable of punishing even the smallest mistakes.
Ultimately, the 2–2 draw reflected a competitive encounter between two sides that both had opportunities to secure a better result. Hull pushed hard for victory, but Everton’s determination to fight back ensured the visitors avoided defeat, with Dewsbury-Hall emerging as one of the key figures in an entertaining contest.
