Everton could have a growing interest in the consequences of Manchester City’s major Premier League financial case following the latest development in the long-running dispute.

Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of the vast majority of the financial-rule charges brought against them. The allegations cover several seasons, although the case is not yet completely concluded, with City expected to challenge the findings through an appeal. No final sporting punishment has been announced at this stage.

The development could have wider consequences for clubs throughout the Premier League, particularly given the precedent established by Everton’s own recent legal dispute with Burnley.

Everton were ordered to pay Burnley almost £40 million after an independent commission ruled that the club’s breach of financial regulations had contributed to Burnley’s relegation in 2022. Everton have appealed that decision and continue to dispute the ruling.

That precedent could become relevant if other clubs seek compensation following the Manchester City case.

Premier League regulations can allow clubs to pursue compensation when another club is found to have breached financial rules. The Burnley-Everton case has therefore demonstrated that financial breaches can potentially lead to claims between clubs where sporting consequences are alleged.

For Everton, that could provide a reason to examine whether any eventual punishment imposed on Manchester City could have consequences for the Merseyside club.

There is, however, no confirmed compensation claim from Everton against Manchester City at present. Before the latest City verdict, reports stated that Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool had taken steps to protect their potential rights to seek compensation. Everton were not among the four clubs named in those reports.

Any possible benefit for Everton would therefore depend on what happens next.

If Manchester City are eventually handed a major sporting punishment, such as a points deduction, it could alter the Premier League standings and potentially affect the distribution of positions. The precise consequences would depend on the eventual sanction and the outcome of any appeal.

The situation also carries particular significance for Everton because the club has previously maintained that Premier League financial regulations should be applied consistently. Everton have themselves faced PSR sanctions and have challenged aspects of the way financial regulations have been handled.

Manchester City’s case could consequently become another major test of how the Premier League deals with financial-rule breaches and their potential consequences.

For now, Everton cannot assume they will receive compensation, points or any other direct advantage from the case. Manchester City’s punishment has yet to be decided, while an appeal is also expected.

Nevertheless, the precedent created by the Burnley-Everton dispute means the consequences of the Manchester City verdict could potentially stretch well beyond the Etihad Stadium, making the next stage of the case one Everton will be watching closely.
