Former Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic has emerged as one of the talking points after Brighton’s stunning 3-0 demolition of Arsenal, with the Croatian defender playing a key role as the Seagulls brought the Premier League champions crashing back down to earth.
Arsenal arrived at the Amex Stadium with a perfect Premier League record, but their afternoon quickly turned into a nightmare as Brighton produced a dominant performance from start to finish.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring before Babis Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage just before half-time. Chema Andres then added a third shortly after the interval to complete a memorable victory for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.
Vuskovic was at the heart of Brighton’s defensive display. The former Tottenham player made an important interception early in the contest to deny Christos Tzolis, while Brighton continued to frustrate Arsenal’s attacking players throughout the match.
The result also created an opportunity for Vuskovic to make his presence felt against a side that had started the campaign in impressive fashion.
Arsenal struggled to find any rhythm, with Mikel Arteta admitting afterwards that his team were extremely poor technically and had failed to respect some of the basic principles required to escape Brighton’s pressure.
Attention has since turned towards Arsenal’s individual performances, with several of their attacking players failing to make the expected impact.
Bukayo Saka, for example, missed Arsenal’s clearest first-half opportunity when he was picked out by Martin Odegaard inside the Brighton penalty area but could not get enough contact on his effort to seriously trouble Bart Verbruggen.
That moment became symbolic of Arsenal’s frustrating afternoon.
For Vuskovic, meanwhile, the victory represented another major step in his rapid development since leaving Tottenham. Brighton completed his signing from Spurs in July on a five-year contract, with the club describing him as one of the continent’s most sought-after young defenders after his impressive spell at Hamburg.
The 19-year-old now finds himself at the centre of Brighton’s defence, and his performance against Arsenal will only increase attention on the player Tottenham allowed to leave for a reported club-record fee of around £46 million.
While there is no verified public quote from Vuskovic directly attacking an Arsenal player after the match, his performance on the pitch provided its own response.
Brighton had beaten Arsenal in almost every department, and Vuskovic was part of a defensive unit that kept the champions scoreless while his new club celebrated one of the biggest victories of the early Premier League season.
For Arsenal, it was a brutal reality check. For Brighton and Vuskovic, it was a statement that the young defender is ready to make his mark in the Premier League.
