The controversial dismissal of Jean-Philippe Mateta became one of the biggest talking points during Tottenham Hotspur’s victory over Crystal Palace, with former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett backing referee Michael Oliver’s decision to send off the French striker.

The incident occurred just 12 minutes into the encounter when Mateta launched a dangerous challenge on Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.

Referee Oliver initially allowed play to continue without showing a red card. However, following a VAR intervention, the official was advised to review the incident before eventually changing his decision and dismissing the Crystal Palace forward for serious foul play.

Tottenham quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Archie Gray opening the scoring in the 25th minute after heading home Mohammed Kudus’ corner.

Jan Paul van Hecke subsequently helped Spurs secure a 2-0 victory with another goal in the second half, as Roberto De Zerbi’s men took full advantage of playing against ten opponents.

Although Tottenham might still have secured all three points without the dismissal, there is little doubt that Mateta’s early departure significantly influenced the contest.

Keith Hackett delivers verdict on Mateta’s controversial red card

The decision to dismiss Mateta has generated considerable debate among supporters, with Tottenham fans believing the Crystal Palace striker deserved his punishment, while those associated with the Eagles could argue that Oliver was too harsh.

However, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has thrown his support behind the referee, insisting that the challenge clearly warranted a straight red card.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Hackett did not hesitate to give his assessment of the incident, praising Oliver for eventually reaching what he considered the correct decision after consulting VAR.

“Wow, that is a poor challenge and the red card is the correct decision,” Hackett said.

“These are the challenges where VAR comes in and allows the referee Oliver to have a second look.”

The nature of Mateta’s challenge was particularly concerning, as the striker caught Van de Ven around the Achilles area with his right leg extended and his boot raised.

Although both of his feet were not completely off the ground, the position of his leg and the point of contact made the challenge dangerous.

Mateta immediately raised his arm in an apparent apology after realising the seriousness of the incident, but his reaction did little to change the outcome once Oliver had reviewed the footage.

The VAR intervention ultimately proved decisive, allowing the referee to reconsider his initial assessment and upgrade the punishment to a dismissal.

Keith Hackett praises Jarred Gillett for his role in Tottenham’s victory

While Michael Oliver was responsible for making the final decision on the pitch, another official played an important role in ensuring that the incident received the necessary attention.

Australian-born referee Jarred Gillett was operating as the VAR official during Tottenham’s encounter with Crystal Palace, having established himself as a regular Premier League referee since arriving in England in 2019.

Gillett began officiating in the Premier League in 2021 and was responsible for reviewing Mateta’s challenge before recommending that Oliver take another look at the incident.

Hackett was equally impressed with the VAR official’s involvement, believing his intervention demonstrated the importance of having experienced officials capable of identifying serious incidents that may initially go unnoticed.

Speaking to Tottenham News, the former PGMOL chief specifically highlighted Gillett’s contribution and praised the way he handled the situation.

“Once again VAR Jarred Gillett demonstrates that he is a very good VAR operator. Red card is the correct outcome,” Hackett said.

Hackett’s assessment provides further backing for the officiating team following the controversial moment, with both Oliver and Gillett receiving praise for their respective roles in the decision.

For Tottenham, the dismissal proved to be a major turning point in an important London derby, while Crystal Palace were left frustrated after losing one of their most dangerous attacking players so early in the contest.
