Chelsea suffered a disappointing afternoon at Stamford Bridge as Tottenham Hotspur claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over their London rivals, with Xabi Alonso’s side struggling to match the visitors for much of the contest.
The Blues found themselves on the back foot for long periods, with goalkeeper Mike Penders’ unfortunate own goal handing Spurs the advantage before Mathys Tel produced a brilliant individual effort to secure all three points for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.
However, Tottenham’s victory was not the only major talking point, as Chelsea’s discipline came under intense scrutiny after tempers flared during the closing stages of the match.
Gary Neville believes another Chelsea player should have been sent off
Gary Neville believes Chelsea should have finished the game with just nine players after Morgan Rogers’ late challenge on Conor Gallagher prompted a furious reaction from the Sky Sports pundit.
The incident happened in the 91st minute, with Chelsea already trailing 2-0 and down to 10 men following Cole Palmer’s dismissal earlier in the second half.
Rogers, who previously played alongside Gallagher at Chelsea, caught the Tottenham midfielder with a late challenge. Referee Chris Kavanagh responded by showing the Chelsea player a yellow card.
However, Neville was convinced that the punishment did not reflect the seriousness of the tackle, openly expressing his frustration during Sky Sports’ live coverage.
“I think that’s a red card. I really do. He’s wellied him […] it’s ludicrous,” the former Manchester United defender said.
The 51-year-old was clearly unhappy with the decision, particularly given the increasingly heated atmosphere as the match approached its conclusion.
Chelsea had already lost Palmer to a second bookable offence after the forward caught Gallagher with a late challenge. His dismissal left Alonso’s team with an uphill battle to get back into the contest.
Neville’s reaction added another layer of controversy to Chelsea’s disappointing performance, with the pundit questioning the players’ inability to keep their emotions under control during a difficult afternoon.
Chelsea’s disciplinary issues make a miserable afternoon even worse
Rogers was not the only Chelsea player to come under criticism from Neville, as Palmer’s sending-off proved to be another significant talking point in the defeat.
The England international had earlier been involved in an altercation with Mateus Fernandes before eventually receiving his marching orders for his challenge on Gallagher.
Neville was unimpressed with Palmer’s behaviour, suggesting that the forward had allowed his emotions to take over during an already tense London derby.
On the pitch, Chelsea struggled to produce enough clear-cut chances to seriously trouble Tottenham, who looked the more dangerous side and controlled important periods of the game.
Penders’ unfortunate own goal gave De Zerbi’s side the breakthrough they needed, while Tel’s outstanding solo finish later in the match put the result beyond doubt.
For Alonso, the defeat will raise concerns about both his team’s overall performance and their discipline. Chelsea struggled to impose themselves against their rivals, and their inability to manage their frustration only compounded an already disappointing result.
The Chelsea manager must now find a way to lift his players and ensure they respond positively in their next fixture. With a demanding Carabao Cup meeting against Liverpool on the horizon, Alonso will be eager to see a significant improvement in both performance and discipline.
