Frank Lampard has questioned VAR’s decision to allow Omar Marmoush’s controversial goal to stand during Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, insisting the officials should have ruled it out following an alleged elbow on Milan van Ewijk.

Marmoush restored Tottenham’s advantage in the 58th minute, producing a superb curling finish to score his first goal since completing his summer move from Manchester City.

However, the goal was preceded by a contentious incident involving Coventry defender Van Ewijk. As Marmoush attempted to create space, he appeared to catch the defender with a raised arm, leaving the Coventry player on the ground before the Tottenham forward finished confidently past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

The incident was reviewed by VAR, but the officials decided there was insufficient reason to overturn the on-field decision. Marmoush’s goal was therefore allowed to stand, much to Lampard’s frustration.

Speaking after the final whistle, the Coventry manager made it clear that he believed VAR should have intervened and disallowed the strike.

“I did think that VAR should have looked at it,” Lampard admitted.

“I think if you roll and your elbows are that high and it connects with Milan in the contact it did, I thought VAR would cancel it. I did.”

Lampard was careful not to dwell too heavily on the officiating, acknowledging the difficulties involved in discussing controversial decisions after a match. Nevertheless, he stood by his belief that the incident deserved a different outcome.

“You have to be really careful how you choose your words after this because there’s no point in getting after the event to get too deep into it. But I absolutely felt that,” he added.

The Coventry boss also suggested that several other decisions during the contest had gone against his side, arguing that a series of small incidents had collectively made a difference to the outcome.

He pointed to a disputed corner, a challenge involving Brandon Thomas-Asante and a late incident in which he felt Coventry should have benefited from an advantage.

“The little bits add up, the corner adds up, Brandon getting fouled trying to stay on his feet and then another little action and you don’t get the advantage late into the game is a big deal for us. That’s all I’ll say about it,” Lampard explained.

Despite his disappointment with the result and the officiating, Lampard was keen to highlight the positives from Coventry’s performance. He felt his players had competed well against their Premier League opponents and believed the final scoreline did not fully reflect how closely contested the match had been.

“A really good display. 3-1 changes the view at the end of the game, but I thought at 2-1 we were really pushing,” he continued.

Lampard also praised the quality of Tottenham’s goals, acknowledging that his side had been beaten by moments of exceptional individual ability rather than simply being outplayed throughout the contest.

“It takes them two outstanding and world-class goals to score their goals,” he said.

The Coventry manager then highlighted the contrast in experience between the two teams, pointing out that eight of his starting players had previously competed in the Championship.

In his view, Coventry had demonstrated that they could compete with an established Premier League side despite the significant difference in their recent histories.

“Tottenham will get better and improve for sure, but when you think that eight of our starting players were in the Championship,” Lampard said.

“You wouldn’t know which is the team that has been in the Premier League for the last 25 years and who has been out of it for 25 years.”

Although Tottenham ultimately secured a 3-1 victory, Lampard’s post-match comments ensured that attention remained on Marmoush’s controversial goal and the VAR decision that allowed it to stand. For Coventry, the result was disappointing, but their manager remained convinced that his team had shown enough quality to take encouragement from the performance.
