Although Tottenham have strengthened their squad with several players boasting Premier League experience this summer, the club have also seen a number of promising young talents leave.
Luka Vuskovic, Tynan Thompson, Alfie Devine and Will Lankshear have all moved on from Spurs, while reports suggest that Ashley Phillips could also be heading for the exit.
However, another talented young defender has now left Tottenham’s academy to join their fierce North London rivals, Arsenal.
Elijah Upson Explains Why He Chose Arsenal Over Tottenham
Highly rated centre-back Elijah Upson has revealed why he decided to leave Tottenham for Arsenal after turning down several contract offers from the Lilywhites.
The 18-year-old was regarded as a promising prospect at Hotspur Way, but the opportunity to learn from some of the best defenders in the game played a significant role in his decision to join the Gunners.
Speaking about his move, Upson explained that the chance to train alongside top-level players and gain valuable experience was one of the main attractions.
As reported by The Standard, he said: “That was one of the big reasons for my decision – obviously great exposure to some of these great players that have had a great season here and some real top quality. I’m excited to hopefully be around and work with these people.
“I think definitely the centre-back partnership in the first team that there is between [William] Saliba and Gabriel, they’re a good inspiration and really experienced, high-quality players. They’ve had a great season, definitely two players that I’m really keen to learn from and expose myself to hopefully.”
The teenager’s comments will make disappointing reading for Tottenham supporters, particularly given that he turned down multiple offers to remain at the club before choosing to continue his development at the Emirates.
Upson Proud to Join Arsenal After Leaving Spurs
Upson is the son of former England international Mathew Upson, who developed through Arsenal’s academy before establishing himself in senior football and captaining West Ham United.
The young defender has already represented England at under-18 level, further highlighting his potential and the promise he has shown at youth level.
Despite his previous connection with Tottenham, Upson has made it clear that he is delighted to begin the next chapter of his career with Arsenal.
Reflecting on his arrival, he spoke positively about the atmosphere at the club and the impression made by the coaching staff and players.
“It’s a great feeling, really proud to be here. When I met the guys here recently and met all the team and staff, it just seemed like a really nice environment. That was probably the biggest factor, an environment where you feel you can hopefully learn and get better as a person,” he added.
For Arsenal, securing the services of another promising young defender represents an opportunity to invest in the future. For Tottenham, meanwhile, losing a highly rated academy prospect to their biggest local rivals will undoubtedly be frustrating, especially with Upson openly expressing his pride at making the switch.
