An era coming to an end: The man who gave cycling so much color, Peter Sagan, is retiring.
In his final competition as a professional road rider, Peter Sagan placed ninth in the Tour de Vendée on October 1, 2023. That Sunday,
somewhere in the west of France, was the day that truly ended Sagan’s incredible cycling career, even though the peak of his career had already passed owing to unsatisfactory performances. A tribute to ‘Peter the Great,’ the man who succeeded in bringing cycling so much color.
Of course, this homage, penned by a fan, is also a part of our series on retired cyclists. Yes, yours truly has always been a fan of the sport of cycling, just like a lot of other people. But it was the flamboyant Slovakian who rekindled my passion for cycling at the start of the previous decade. Sagan has already demonstrated his talents as an entertainer, joker, and elite rider from the beginning of his career.

Let’s go back to the beginning: Peter Sagan was born in Zilina, a city in northwest Slovakia, on January 26, 1990. His parents had to work together to maintain the family at the time, and they were mostly focused on operating their mom-and-pop store, which was situated in Zilina. As a result, Daniela, his older sister, raised little Peter for the most part. Sagan had a broad interest in sports as a young child. After years of considering other choices, he decided to give cycling a try when he was nine years old. In Slovakia, it was not a very well-liked sport.
