Following his Tour de France victory, Tadej Pogačar withdraws from the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Slovenian will not compete in the road race on August 3 because the national team claims he is “too tired,” with Domen Novak substituting.
Tadej Pogačar, who just finished the first Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double since 1998, has denied his berth to race in the Olympic Games in Paris, claiming exhaustion as his explanation.
He will be replaced in the road race by UAE Emirates trade teammate Domen Novak, according to an announcement made by the Slovenian Olympic Team on Monday. On Saturday, Luka Mezgec and Matej Mohorič will ride in the road race, and Jan Tratnik will participate in the time trial.
Primož Roglič, the reigning Olympic time trial champion, wasn’t named as Pogačar’s replacement or included in the initial roster, although it’s possible that he’s still recovering from the serious accident that ended his Tour de France career.
“The men’s cycling team selector revealed the names of the cyclists that will compete in this year’s Olympic Games in Paris,” read the Instagram post.
“Unfortunately, Tadej Pogačar won’t be among them, who cancelled his performance due to being too tired. He will be replaced by a representative colleague Domen Novak. We wish Dom all the best and success.
“Congratulations again to the winner of the France race for his third victory at the most prestigious cycling race in the world and we hope that he will rest well and get ready for the next performances.”
