The cycling world provides advice, and Mathieu van der Poel spurs debate to resolve difficulty.
Mathieu van der Poel finally revealed his plans for the forthcoming summer cycling season last week. The Dutchman’s main priorities will be the Tour de France and the Olympic road race, but what kind of shorts should he start with? He posed the question to his Instagram followers, and some amusing answers resulted.
Van der Poel, who is from Spain, uploaded a compilation video of himself riding a bike while sporting two pairs of shorts: a white pair and a black pair that he has previously worn multiple times this season. With a caption that read, “Let’s settle this debate once and for all,” the Alpecin-Deceuninck team captain stated.
After sixteen hours, out of almost forty-five thousand responses, the percentage of white respondents was sixty-six percent, and of black respondents, thirty-seven percent. “Without a doubt,” was the revealing reply from Luke Plapp, a rider for Jayco AlUla who represents Australia in the Giro d’Italia, while sporting white shorts. It was also evident from Van der Poel’s girlfriend that she liked the white version better.
In addition, sponsors Alpecin and Canyon commented. Canyon mentioned that Alpecin likes black shorts for cyclocross, but they are wearing white team shorts. We will have to wait until the end of June to find out what will happen in the end because that is when Van der Poel will compete in the Tour de France again.
