Crystal Palace have been dealt a significant setback following their disappointing 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, with Jean-Philippe Mateta set to miss the club’s next three Premier League matches after receiving a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Micky van de Ven.

The French striker was dismissed just 13 minutes into Saturday’s encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after making a reckless sliding challenge on the Dutch defender.

Mateta attempted to reach a loose ball but arrived late, catching Van de Ven around the Achilles with his studs in a challenge that immediately raised concerns among the home supporters.

Referee Michael Oliver initially produced a yellow card, but following a VAR intervention, he was instructed to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

After examining the footage, Oliver changed his original decision and showed Mateta a straight red card for serious foul play, leaving Crystal Palace with 10 men for virtually the entire contest.

The dismissal proved particularly costly for Palace, who were already under pressure following a difficult run of results under manager Pierre Sage.

Tottenham took advantage of their numerical superiority when Archie Gray headed home from a Mohammed Kudus corner in the 25th minute.

Although Palace attempted to remain competitive after falling behind, Roberto De Zerbi’s side continued to dominate proceedings, eventually doubling their advantage through Jan Paul van Hecke in the 73rd minute.

The result secured Tottenham’s third consecutive Premier League victory and moved them up to eighth in the table.

However, the consequences of Mateta’s dismissal could extend well beyond Saturday’s defeat.

Under Premier League disciplinary regulations, a straight red card for serious foul play normally carries an automatic three-match suspension.

Consequently, Mateta is expected to miss Crystal Palace’s next three league fixtures against Liverpool, Coventry City and Hull City.

It represents a particularly damaging blow for Sage, who could now be without one of his most important attacking options during a crucial period of the campaign.

Mateta had only recently returned from an injury setback and had started Palace’s previous two matches, making his absence even more frustrating for the Eagles.

His physical presence, ability to hold up possession and threat inside the penalty area have been important components of Palace’s attacking approach.

Without him, Sage will have to consider alternative options, with Eddie Nketiah among the players who could be asked to shoulder additional responsibility in attack.

The timing is also far from ideal, considering Palace’s difficult league position and the growing pressure surrounding the manager.

The Eagles entered the Tottenham encounter looking to improve their fortunes but suffered another damaging defeat, leaving them in the relegation zone.

Their upcoming meeting with Liverpool at Selhurst Park now becomes even more important, particularly with Mateta unavailable.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will take considerable encouragement from the victory, having demonstrated their ability to punish Palace after being handed an early numerical advantage.

Van de Ven will also be relieved that he avoided a serious injury following the challenge, which could have resulted in a much worse outcome for the Spurs defender.

For Mateta, however, attention will now turn towards serving his suspension and preparing for a return to action.

Crystal Palace could still appeal the dismissal, although overturning a straight red card for serious foul play would be a difficult task.

Unless the decision is successfully overturned, the Frenchman will be forced to watch Palace’s next three Premier League matches from the sidelines.
