While Tottenham supporters are eagerly waiting to see 18-year-old Luca Williams-Barnett make his Premier League debut, another young talent from the club’s academy has already experienced top-flight football, having made his first-team bow last season.
Tottenham’s Under-21 side faced Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, eventually suffering a 7-6 penalty shootout defeat after the two teams played out a 2-2 draw in normal time.
Much of the attention surrounding the match centred on Richarlison, who scored his first goal of the season and celebrated in his usual passionate fashion.
Cheltenham manager Steve Cotterill was particularly impressed by the Brazilian forward’s attitude and commitment, despite his current situation at Tottenham. The striker has been frozen out of Roberto De Zerbi’s first-team plans, making his appearance for the U21s an opportunity to get valuable minutes on the pitch.
However, Richarlison was not the only Tottenham player with a significant moment to celebrate. The fixture also marked an important step forward for a promising academy youngster who had been sidelined with an injury since the end of last season.
Jun’ai Byfield Returns to Action After Five Months Out
Jun’ai Byfield has made his long-awaited return to competitive action after spending five months on the sidelines with a back injury.
The 17-year-old enjoyed opportunities with Tottenham’s senior team last season under Thomas Frank, making three appearances across competitions. Two of those outings came in the Champions League, while the other was in the Premier League.
Although Byfield is naturally a centre-back, he demonstrated his versatility by also featuring in midfield and at right-back when called upon by the senior team. His ability to adapt to different positions suggested that he could have an exciting future at the club.
Unfortunately, a back problem suffered in May disrupted his progress, forcing him to miss the entire pre-season programme and the opening part of the current campaign.
His appearance against Cheltenham represented his first competitive minutes in five months, providing a welcome boost after a lengthy spell away from the pitch.
Byfield entered the game as a substitute in the 70th minute and subsequently stepped up to take a penalty during the extended shootout. However, his effort was saved as Tottenham eventually lost the contest.
Despite the disappointment of the penalty miss, his return to action was the most important development. Having completed his appearance without suffering another injury, the youngster can now concentrate on rebuilding his fitness and regaining the impressive form he displayed last season.
If he can maintain his progress over the coming weeks, Byfield will hope to put himself back in contention for further opportunities with Tottenham’s senior side.
Seven Tottenham Academy Talents Catch De Zerbi’s Attention
Byfield’s return comes at a time when several other Tottenham youngsters appear to be attracting the attention of the first-team coaching staff.
Luca Williams-Barnett, Tye Hall, Callum Olusesi and Tyrese Hall were all missing from the U21 squad for Tuesday’s encounter against Cheltenham.
It subsequently emerged that the quartet had travelled with Tottenham’s senior squad to Marbella for a warm-weather training camp.
Alasdair Gold later reported that Rio Kyerematen, Reiss-Elliott Parris and 18-year-old goalkeeper Dylan Thompson were also included in the training camp.
Their involvement suggests that De Zerbi is taking a closer look at several promising academy players as he assesses his options and considers potential additions to his first-team plans.
For youngsters such as Williams-Barnett and the other academy prospects, the opportunity to train alongside established senior players could prove invaluable as they seek to make the step up to regular first-team football.
Byfield, meanwhile, will be determined to get back to full fitness and demonstrate that he deserves similar consideration.
Having already gained valuable senior experience last season, the defender has reason to be optimistic about his future at Tottenham. His immediate priority, however, will be to build his fitness, rediscover his best form and convince De Zerbi that he is ready for another opportunity at the highest level.
